The first edition of International Human Rights Day hosted by United States Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova

On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, December 10, 2010, at the invitation of United States Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova Asif Chaudhry the Institute for Rural Initiatives participated in an informal roundtable discussion at the American Resource Center together with a number of non-governmental organizations from Moldova, members of civil society that promote human rights, social inclusion, freedom of press and equal opportunity, for a discussion about problems and accomplishments in the field of human rights in the Republic of Moldova.

Ambassador Chaudhry, who was present at the meeting, congratulated participants on the occasion of International Human Rights Day noting that the occasion marks the first time that the United States Embassy in Moldova officially hosted this type of event. Ambassador Chaudhry spoke about the importance of civil society in the Republic of Moldova in the process of democratization of the country, reviewing aspects from the history of the American people throughout the United States in the development of democracy. Representatives of the different organizations participating in the meeting shared their experiences in promoting human rights in the Republic of Moldova in recent years, pointing out a number of sensitive issues in Moldovan society. The activists present appeared appreciative for the discussion while representatives of the United States Embassy expressed optimism at the prospect of closer cooperation between national and regional organizations for more efficient promotion of human rights and democracy in general in the Republic of Moldova.
