Raising awareness through film

Raising awareness through film

On April 20, 2011 the Institute for Rural Initiatives in partnership with “Ion Creanga” theoretical lyceum from Zirnesti village in the Cahul district hosted a thematic film-showing in Zirnesti. This event marked the launch of a new iRi initiative “Assisting quality educational processes in a school attended by Roma children in the Republic of Moldova”. This initiative is financially supported by Roma Education Fund from Budapest, Hungary.

105 students and 6 teachers participated in this event, which was designed to provoke thought and engage youth and adults in a discussion of the importance of extracurricular activism and community participation in an interactive and fun manner. After the film viewing, iRi representatives, Peace Corps volunteers, and EGRETA NGO led a question and answer session in which the group used concepts from the film to discuss simple efforts that everyday people make to help others and change the world around them. The group focused on the idea that even children making small gestures can have a big impact on their communities and the world at large and that regardless their ethnical or social provenience. The discussion encouraged all participants to make a difference in their school/community while acting with responsibility, understanding and tolerance towards others.
