Meeting with parents of children’s educational voucher recipients for “Education Plus”

On January 17, 2013 in the Theoretical Lyceum “Ion Creanga” in the village of Zirnesti, Cahul rayon, there was a parent’s meeting for the children benefitting from the educational vouchers for the project “Education Plus”. The meeting was attended by about 40 parents, IRI representatives and school administration.

The goal of the meeting was to inform the parents about the new quality education initiative for ethnic Roma children that will be implemented in their community’s school. At the same time, the meeting was intended to motivate parents to change their perception to show that obtaining a quality education for their children is of the upmost importance, and to emphasize the parents’ role in their children’s academics.

Ms. Tatiana Costev, “The Institute for Rural Initiatives described to parents how the initiative would improve academic conditions and facilitate the process through three types of assistances (educational vouchers) in order to improve academic levels and participation among students”.

The meeting was filled with discussion about the acute necessity of monitoring the educational process by parents, and the negative effects of indifferent parents towards education. The IRI representative was supported by the school administration in this discussion, the school director Ms. Nadejda Dobinda and vice director Ms. Ecaterina Corja. They appealed to the parents to participate in their children’s academics and their school life.

Parents welcomed the IRI initiative and found the vouchers to facilitate education to be extremely necessary.

At the end of the meeting, parents completed requests to obtain the vouchers (this was interpreted as a serious act of taking responsibility in supervising their children’s education and by attending all announced parents’ meetings).

This activity was organized by the Institute for Rural Initiatives with the support of Liechtenstein Development Service Foundation (LED, Republic of Moldova).
