On September 4, 2010 the Institute for Rural Initiatives in partnership with Egreta NGO from the village of Zirnesti, Cahul rayon, assisted by a number of Peace Corps volunteers with the financial support of the Embassy of the United States of America in Moldova organized successfully the first part of the summer school entitled “Democracy is my choice”.
This activity was organized in the spirit of non-formal open-air summer school and included a complex number of exercises, interactive group-work sessions and thematic games focused on teambuilding, leadership development and intercultural dialog. The interactive open-air school educated a number of 24 children (Roma and non-Roma) with a special focus on non-discrimination and intercultural understanding.
In the last 4 years the Institute for Rural Initiatives has been organizing similar activities for disadvantaged children and youth from Zirnesti community while aiming at increasing participation of vulnerable groups in public life as well as grow awareness in the region, and build capacity to better understand, tolerate and accept people of different social provenience or status.
The second part of the interactive open-air school will take place on September 18, 2010 in Baurci woods and will focus on such thematic areas as conflict and conflict resolution as well as civic responsibility on the very local level.
