In the period of October 11-30, 2013 the Institute for Rural Initiatives organised trainings on capacity building in order to activate the participation of Roma population in decision-making process at the local level. The trainings were held in six regions of Moldova with the highest density of Roma population: Carpineni village (Hincesti region), Hincesti town, Chetrosu and Gribova villages (Drochia region), Parcani village (Calarasi region) and Ferapontievca village (Comrat region).
The purpose of this set of activities was to promote the initiative of civil participation of Roma community through participation in decizion-making at the local level. Therefore promoting the interests of Roma community and the equitable social inclusion.
The meetings were held in Mayoralty Halls of each locality. The event was attended by representatives of Local Authorities, leaders and pro-Roma activists, initiative group members and the IRI expert team.
The team facilitated discussions and answered a series of questions about specific problems of Roma community. A particular emphasis was laid on civil participation and the acquired effects. A succesful example of Roma civil participation is the campaign “We act because we care”, which was carried out in six localities of Moldova. The campaign’s purpose was to combat negative attitudes and stereotypes towards people of Roma origin by raising their participation and community involvement.
Roma and non-Roma communities as well as Local Administration representatives, who were present at these events, mentioned the IRI efforts for equitable integration of Roma community, in particular its new approach. The efficiency of this approach was demonstrated through obtained positive results.
The set of trainings on capacity building in order to activate the participation of Roma population in decision-making process at the local level is an activity of “Increasing the Inclusion of Roma in Moldova: capacity building and facilitating equal participation” initiative. This initiative was implemented by the Institute for Rural Initiatives with the support of the U.S. Embassy in Moldova.
