On Thursday, November 22, 2013 in the premises of the Moldovan government there was held a premiere event in the Republic of Moldova – a republican roundtable “Education Plus: Supporting and advancing the inclusion of Roma kids in one school of Moldova. Successful practices in inclusive education”. As a rule, in these kind of meetings there is much talk about the issues and critique of educational system without any followup. The Institute for Rural Initiatives chose to do something else, and namely to present ideas for improving the situation of Roma children in educational system. As an obtained result, there was created a platform for constructive discussions and a wider range of opinions and proposals of the Ministry of Education, as well as promise to engage and continue.
Following active discussions, which were generated by the UNDP presentation of the last report (2013) on Roma in the Republic of Moldova, IRI presented its successful practice, experience and results of the pilot project Education Plus, implemented during the year 2013. The purpose of the presentation was to demonstrate in statistical terms that the intervention model based on educational vouchers brings results and deserves to be replicated at regional and national level.
The roundtable brought together about 40 participants from different backgrounds: the Prime Minister, Ministry of Education, UN office, the U.S. Embassy in Moldova, international organizations, local authorities, administrations of various schools, representatives of local social welfare offices, community mediators, and Roma leaders.
The roundtable “Education Plus: Supporting and advancing the inclusion of Roma kids in one school of Moldova. Successful practices in inclusive education” was organized by the Institute for Rural Initiatives in partnership with the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Moldova with the support of the Foundation of the Liechtenstein Development Service (LED) in Moldova.
