On September 4-5, 2010 the Institute for Rural Initiatives in partnership with Roma Association Opre O Ciacimos from the village of Minjir, Hincesti rayon, assisted by a number of Peace Corps volunteers with the financial support of Global Fund for Children organized a summer school entitled “We participate because we want so”.
This activity was the first summer school in the region and was aimed at growing the level of activism, the spirit of tolerance, acceptance and understanding among Roma and non-Roma kids from the village of Minjir.
The two days camp included a series of interactive and non-formal activities meant to bring together Roma and non-Roma, get them better know each other while facilitating their non-discriminatory thinking.
The summer school educated 23 Roma and non-Roma kids and was highly appreciated by both participants and their parents. The involved Peace Corps volunteers also appreciate the activity as being very interesting, well organized and extremely benefic for developing a democratic intercultural tolerance and acceptance in the region. A similar activity is planned for the summer of 2011.
Roma Association Opre O Ciacimos continues to be an IRI partner for 3 years now. Since 2009 the Institute has been continuously supporting/assisting the activity of this organization.
