Synergy of practices to counter civic apathy among young people in Central and Eastern Europe

Synergy of practices to counter civic apathy among young people in Central and Eastern Europe

Learning together and bringing home what works

At iRi, Institute for Rural Initiatives, we want young people to have real opportunities to learn, get involved, take initiative and have a say in what happens in their communities. But meaningful youth engagement does not happen simply because we organise another activity or launch another programme. It takes the right approaches, spaces where young people feel heard, and organisations that are ready to learn, try new things and adapt.

This is why iRi joined Synergy, a regional initiative bringing together six civil society organisations from Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, the Republic of Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine.

Because learning goes both ways. iRi brings to this partnership its own experience of working with young people and rural communities in Moldova. By bringing together experiences from six countries, we can learn from one another and find better ways to reach and engage young people.

Ultimately, this is what Synergy means to us: learning from each other and turning that learning into better opportunities for young people at home.

More specifically, Synergy aims to:

  • identify and document practices that can be shared and used more widely;
  • adapt and test practices in new contexts, gathering evidence of the results they produce;
  • directly engage 1,200 young people and 300 representatives of organisations, institutions and other relevant stakeholders across the participating countries;
  • strengthen the competencies of organisations and professionals working with young people;
  • build lasting connections among organisations from the six countries, creating a foundation for continued cooperation and new civic engagement initiatives.

Beyond the numbers, what matters most is that more young people can find real opportunities in their communities to participate, make their voices heard and turn their ideas into concrete initiatives.
