RurACT Model

The word “RurACT”, lexically speaking, is a portmanteau – a combination of two words: Rural and Action.

Local democracy, good governance, community involvement and human rights in rural communities are just some of the key areas of particular interest for two partner organisations: the Institute for Rural Initiatives (iRi) in Moldova and Great Lakes Community Action (GLCAP) in the USA. In the understanding of the two organisations, improving the quality of local democracy and the quality of life in rural areas can only be achieved through a holistic understanding and implementation of a sound rural development concept that includes civic and economic empowerment of communities at its core.

Over the past 7 years (2013-2020) iRi and GLCAP have taken continuing efforts to create and replicate an alternative model of empowerment of ethnic communities in rural areas of the Republic of Moldova.

After 6 years of continuous work and analysis in 30 communities all over Moldova (MEM – Ethnic Community Empowerment Programme) we are talking about a successfully tested model that can inspire other organisations, including state authorities in Moldova to increase the level of integration between LPAs and other state institutions and citizens pursuant to the interest of rural communities.

This is how the RurACT model was created. We hope this model will be useful in your work!
